6 Makeup Hacks for Hooded Eyes

If you have hooded eyes, you know they are oh-so unique! For those that don’t know, having hooded eyes means that you have excess skin under your brow bone. This creates a fold that covers most of the eyelid. Stylecaster.com says “since there’s less surface area so to speak, it can be a bit of a struggle to achieve a full makeup look without eyeshadow completely disappearing, eyeliner smudging, and mascara transferring to the brow bone.”

Those with hooded eyes may have to approach makeup–specifically eye makeup, mascara, and finding and applying false lashes–a bit differently. Nothing to fret, though–all the more reason to be creative!

Here are six fantastic makeup hacks for folks with those with hooded eyes:

  • Always start with a good primer: and we mean always! If you have hooded eyes and wear eye makeup, you know that it is more likely to smudge because of how your skin folds over your eyelid. Investing in a quality primer ensures that any look you create will stay put as long as you’d like. Consider investing in a quality primer and check out this article for 12 great smudge-proof primers that can create the foundation for your best looks yet!
  • Apply your eye makeup with your eyes open, as it can be hard to identify the crease with your eye closed. Then, apply the eyeshadow just above where you're marking your crease as opposed to in the natural fold of your eyelid.
  • If you’re a total beginner, consider trying the straight-line technique: grab a piece of paper or a handkerchief–anything you can hold next to your eye to create a straight line–and apply eyeshadow from the center of your eye straight out toward the handkerchief. This technique creates an illusion, lifting and opening the eyes to make them pop. Check out a full tutorial
  • Know how to apply different types of shadow: From mattes to glitter, applying eye makeup to hooded eyelids in a way that best accentuates the feature requires an intentional approach. Visit this page to view tutorials for creating everything from a natural look to a sultry smoky eye.
  • Invest in a great mascara: Hooded eyes are prone to create makeup and mascara smudges. To avoid clumping and transfer, invest in a mascara that is transfer-proof, stays put, and defines each of your lashes. Check out this article for recommendations on the best mascaras for folks with hooded eyes.
  • Choose the right falsies: If you want to complete your makeup look with a pair of false eyelashes, make sure to choose the right pair. Those with hooded eyes should opt for shorter, more-natural fake eyelashes or thin, fluttery lashes, as they won’t overpower your eye area or your look.
