Makeup Tips for Women With Alopecia

Living with Alopecia can be difficult. Regardless of its severity, living with alopecia might cause patients to need to alter their skincare or makeup routines, giving increased skin sensitivity or hair loss.

We want to remind all patients struggling with alopecia that no matter where you are in your journey, you are beautiful, and there is no need to burden yourself with excessive makeup or skincare routines if it doesn’t suit you. However, we have a few makeup tips for those looking to spruce up their routine:

  • Create a good base: Consider creating a nice base for you to build upon with concealer and a foundation and powder combination of your choice. Or keep it even simpler with a tinted moisturizer or sunscreen.
  • Create eyebrow guidelines: If you’re going to draw on your eyebrows, create guidelines before you do so to ensure they are even in terms of fullness and spacing. You’ll want to draw three guiding dots or lines–one for the beginning of your brow in the middle of your face, one for the arch, and one for the end.
    • Beginning: this guide should be an inch or so above the inner corner of your eye.
    • Arch: this guide should be slightly above the beginning guide, intersecting with where your brow bone protrudes or slightly diagonal from your pupil.
    • End: this guide will be parallel with the beginning guide, or slightly below the arch guide, diagonal from the outer corner of your eye.
  • Draw on your eyebrows: If you have experienced the loss of your eyebrows due to Alopecia and would like to create eyebrows, draw them on using a basic pomade product and angled brush. Dip the brush into the pomade and carefully draw light-handed lines upward, mimicking the look of hair follicles. Layer these lines to your desired thickness.
